Standing in the plaza with Lydia, she was discussing some of the language we had been studying that evening with me. We had spent hours on it and I was starting to somewhat grasp some core words. She had gone over several ones she felt might be important to my turning. Phrases that related to the darkness, changing, light, and anything of that nature were the first of them we went over.
There was even a form of runic writing that went with it, but she hadn't bothered to touch on it at that time. She would often start on some tangent before correcting herself by saying we'd revisit it another time. The darkness breaking out of the bonds she had created on me had shaken her, and she was a tough teacher. We worked all night on pronunciation. With every repeated infliction, my focus waned. My mind would soon be mush if we took any more time on it.
She must have sensed she was losing me because we broke away and were now headed back to Altyr's room. I saw their general Phillip rushing in, looking for what I could only assume was Orrin. All he did was give Lydia a shake of his head and she bid me farewell, joining him on the hunt for their lord.
That man's presence made me uneasy. Not because he himself had done anything wrong. In fact, he seemed like a delightful man. I frequently caught him sneaking pastries out of the kitchens after he had talks with Orrin. In my head I told myself it was because he wasn't normally in the castle this often, but with the encroaching army, he was here more frequently. It put the war directly in my face each time I saw him. I wanted to believe that he normally didn't get delicious pastries wherever he was stationed, so he was making the best of the situation and filling his stomach. I also told myself he would flirt with the baker some to get a few extra.
He probably just liked sweets, and I was romanticizing it a bit.
My eyes followed them as they ran up the steps. There was something strange about how they interacted. He frequently put his hand on her back as he would direct her through the keep. She didn't seem the type of person to let anyone touch her. I wondered who's hollow he was. It hadn't occurred to me that he may just be her hollow and not Orrin's. Altyr had said that a vampire has a deep connection with their hollow's that they could sense them. I didn't know if it was rude to ask if they were connected in this way or not.
Every time he showed up, it seemed to put Orrin in a sour mood. They wouldn't talk with me about the details, but I could only assume it was bad news each time by the sinking mood. I knew Bazak and his men were out there and they were coming for us.
